MOBILIZING ALL NIGERIA-AMERICANS FOR BIDEN

According to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) report in 2015, the population of Nigerian immigrants and their children in the United States is approximately 376,000, which conceivably is over 400,000 by now (this figure suggests a very conservative estimate of the real number of Nigerian immigrants and their children on the United States). Nigerian immigrants account for about 0.6 percent of the United States’ overall foreign-born population, and a similar proportion of Nigerian immigrants are naturalized U.S. citizen. Furthermore, the report estimates that 52% of the total number of Nigerian immigrants in the United States (195,520) is naturalized US citizens. The US Census Bureau indicated that 66.8% of the total US population is over 18 years of age, as a result, the population of Nigerian immigrants who are naturalized citizens and are 18 years and above, is 130,607. This is the number of Nigerians-Americans qualified to vote in the next Presidential Election.

FACTS ABOUT NIGERIAN IMMIGRANTS

  • As of 2016, 59% of Nigerian immigrants of the age 25 and older in the U.S. had a bachelor’s degree or more education – a share roughly double that of the overall American population (Pew Research Center).
  • Globally, Nigerians in the Diaspora remitted over $24 billion to Nigeria in 2018. Remittance from the United States was more than from any other country, and equally more than was sent to any other African nation. (New American Economy)
  • Nigerians in the United States generated over $14 billion into the US economy in 2018, and paid $4 billion in taxes. (New American Economy)
  • Based on a 2019 survey, 58% of Nigerian adults said they had confidence in Trump to do the right thing regarding world affairs, compared with a median of 29% across 32 nations surveyed by the Pew Research Center.

KEYS TO NIGERIAN COMMUNITY SUPPORT

  • Biden’s long history of steadfast support for equal rights and justice; the Civil Rights Movement; Anti-Apartheid South Africa; Human Rights; and Climate Change; and many other human interest policies.
  • Desire to engage Nigerian-Americans in constructive dialogue to shape United States policies for a more balanced response to the needs of Nigerian immigrants in the United State, and interests in the home country, Nigeria;
  • Governments, businesses and civil society organisations throughout Africa are eager to see how they can best capitalize on Biden Presidency.
  • Increasing warming relations between African-Americans and Africans in the Diaspora; the groundswell movement by “African-Americans” to connect with the “Motherland;” and the growing millions of first-generation African citizens and their children who are empowered to vote, and are now collectively willing to join forces to vote in the coming election.

THE NIGERIAN COMMUNITY CHALLENGE

Nigerians have continued to make significant contributions in all works of life in the United States, but have not been able to pull their collective strength and resources in building a strong political force.  As a result, socio-economic and political issues affecting the Community have largely been ignored for lack of political influence. This election is intended to mark a turning-point as the Community mobilizes to make its votes counts, especially in the “battleground” States where Nigerian votes can make a big difference.

This organization is willing and committed to persuade Nigerian immigrants and their children in the United States to come out to register and vote for Biden. The collective efforts of all will make a huge difference in electing Joe Biden the next President of the United States, and lay the foundation for more political engagement in future elections.
